The world of Elvides is one of constant flux. Knowledge, memories, landmasses, even Time itself can be hidden behind the mystical phenomenon known as Veils. No one, mortal, or any of the Great or Lesser Powers, knows how the Veils came to be, or the rhyme and reason of their Appearance and Lifting. Legends speak of a being known as the Veilkeeper, whose sole purpose is to oversee the activity of the Veils. Such tales have long since been dismissed as stories to help people understand the workings of their world, however, and hold little meaning in the world today.
Sometimes the Lifting of a Veil brings newfound wonders unto the world. Or it can bring calamity and despair. A Veil is just as likely to conceal a massive, barren waste, as it is sprawling gardens laden with delectable fruits and vegetables. History has shown that the only direct correlation between Veils and what they conceal is the size of what appears when the Vale Lifts. Given this, the Powers of the world seek to keep larger Veils from appearing inside their domains, and expend a great deal of energy to do so. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the Appearance of small Veils, the Great Powers of the world are able to exert their influence enough to keep Veils from utterly destroying the civilizations of the mortal races.
One thing is certain though, it is impossible to pierce a Veil. Many have tried, and failed, some with catastrophic consequences. Whatever attempts to enter a Veil simply appears on the opposite side. While dangerous, the other side of a large Veil might end in front of a deep ravine after all, this unique facet of a Veil’s properties has enabled many a daring adventurer, or shrewd merchant, to travel great distances in short amounts of time, given the size of a particular Veil. People who use Veils in such a manner are commonly referred to as “Veil Slides.”
